A Garden comes to life...In the summer/fall of 2016, a team of teachers (Shermain Jessie, Caitlin Hill, Jeannie Parker, and Noel Adams) worked together to earn their Master Gardener credentials. This was they year they planned to begin a gardening club at Indian Creek (ICES).
As fate would have it, a local nonprofit organization, Clarkston Development Foundation (CDF), was beginning a W.K. Kellogg Foundation grant which seeks family and community engagement and the families chose ICES as the place where they would like to spend the grant money! Over the course of several months (winter), CDF and families came together to discuss the community trust and many ideas that would engage families with the school. The decision-making process arrived at the desire to form a science education garden which can serve as a connection between students, teachers, and parents. Of course, this fit in perfectly with what the ICES teachers were already working toward. In the spring of 2017, the project began and picked up full steam as parents, kids, and teachers all worked together to dig, plant, water, and watch as the garden to took shape. Many wonderful plants began to grow and produce food that could be enjoyed by students and parents. Ms. Jessie, Ms. Hill, Ms. Parker, and Ms. Adams worked to create educational lessons and activities that would be carried out with various grade levels for years to come! Now, for the past TWO (2+) years, we have had Farmer Meggie, a FoodCorps service member with the IRC (International Rescue Committee) work at ICES as a huge asset to our staff and students, bringing several health initiatives to our school. Thanks Farmer Meggie! https://foodcorps.org/foodcorps-service-member-brings-veggie-madness-to-indian-creek-elementary/ What's Growing?
